GOTHAM NEWS: College presidents urge government to lower drinking age…

This is a drunk 18 year old:

This is a drunk 21 year old:

Difference?

THREE THINGS THAT I’VE WONDERED FOR THE LONGEST:

: Why the fuck do men have nipples?

: How the fuck do they make boneless chicken, boneless?

: Why the fuck can I buy cigarettes at 18, join the military and kill people at 18, get married at 18, charged as an adult at 18 and buy porn at 18, but can’t buy a drink at 18?

The age range of 18-20 should get it’s own category…PRE-ADULT….Because there’s no way an 18 year old is really seriously considered to be a FULL adult when there’s restrictions harping on their age.

I mean damn, I can KILL at 18 but can’t buy a damn wine cooler?

Most 18 year olds drink anyway, especially in college which is why 100 presidents hailing from the best known universities from Duke to Dartmouth to even Morehouse have come together to provoke national debate on the topic

“The movement is called the Amethyst Initiative began quietly recruiting presidents more than a year ago to provoke national debate about the drinking age. This is a law that is routinely evaded, it is a law that the people at whom it is directed believe is unjust and unfair and discriminatory.”—John McCardell, former president of Middlebury College in Vermont

Now, now 18 year old Faith (shouts out to my God Sis!) before you start running to the liquor store bucked up that an age change is on the horizon, there are as always, the haters…

“Lowering the drinking age would lead to more fatal car crashes. The presidents are misrepresenting science and looking for an easy way out of an inconvenient problem. We here at MADD are urging parents to think carefully about the safety of colleges whose presidents have signed on. Because it is very clear the 21-year-old drinking age will not and is not being enforced at those campuses,” Laura Dean-Mooney, national president of MADD.

No disrespect to the MADD organization, they do alot of good in the world and all that, but seriously if Ms. Mooney believes that a college can monitor what a student is doing 24 hours a day, then maybe we should get her kicked out of MADD for being a lil too ‘mad'(?)

…nah mean?

Maybe I’m tainted coming from this alcholic heaven of a city called New Orleans, but I remember being 15 years old seeing and at times being the kid swigging a wine cooler back like it’s kool-aid, luckily I never was on alcohol too hard growing up, but some kids do turn into big level drinkers as they get older and this is just a fact, that there will always be a percentage of under age drinkers…but the thing is, the percentage of underage drinkers is highest amongst the 18 year olds, so…and I suck at math, but the way I see it, lowering the age of underage drinkers will take up that percentage of 18 year olds drinking, seeing as how 18 would not only be the accepted killing age but would then become the accepted alchie age.

Reducing the age in the U.S. could be helpful. There isn’t that much difference in maturity between 21 and 18, If the age is younger, you’re getting exposed to it at a younger age, and you don’t freak out when you get to campus.” Moana Jagasia, a Duke University sophomore from Singapore, where the drinking age is lower

Wise words….the more sheltered the person, the bigger the nut they’ll be once let loose…

The bottom line is there’s always a way to get whatever you want…and if an 18 year old hit up the club then that 18 year old will drink, whether its getting somebody to buy the drinks for em like me and my folk use to do, or just looking so old that the bar tender doesn’t care.

Will dropping the age limit stop drunk drivers? Nope…will this decrease drunk driving? Nope not at all, but I doubt it’ll increase drunk driving much either, all of the stats on that end will probably just stay the same. The hugest negative I can see to this is everything dropping, like, since 18 would be the new 21, would that make 16 the new 18?

I’m not saying we should give 16 year olds the ability to buy cigarettes and kill UnAmericans, but I’m wondering would that naturally make the 16 year old population the new underage drinking population? Seeing as how many of their 18 year old friends (its only a two year age gap) could now buy them liquor…that could be a problem…

…but once again, I dunno where you’re from…but down here it’s damn near part of the culture already…

  1. I really don’t think there would be a great influx of drunk driving accidents like the lady at MADD believes because wheather you realize it or not most 18 year olds drink already…. well at least the 18 year old’s I know. But with lowering the drinking age what other foolishness is going to come with it. How will the more mature club scene change because most upscale clubs only require you to be 21 because they don’t wonna have to deal with the underage drinking bull once you are in their fine establishment. So if this whole drinking age thing is lowered will that mean I will be “two-stepping” next to my lil sis while she’s celebrating her graduation party with the class of 2010??? I must say this subject can be debated for days because yes it is wrong for you to be able to get lung cancer and lose a limb thanks to Osama’s homeboys but you can’t have your favorite martini on the rocks when you’re 18. But what else will change along with this whole I wonna be drunk legally at the tender age of 18 ordeal. I mean if we’re going to lower the drinking age let’s not stop there let’s lower the gambling age to while we’re at it. At the age of 18 you should be able to get drunk, ruin your credit, aquire a gambeling problem and get lung cancer all in the same year. So let’s think this whole situation through before we try to change things.
